    Realistic and hopeful

An excellent read! It is especially appealing for middle-schoolers and those interested in the issue of immigration. Even adults would find it interesting. As a retired Spanish teacher I liked the use of Spanish expressions throughout the novel. Although the story depicts the many struggles and hardships of immigrants, it maintains a hopeful life view.

  • An inspiring heroine in a great story

Esperanza means hope, and that's what this book is all about. When everything Esperanza knows comes to a crashing halt because of a family tragedy, Esperanza has a lot of trouble adjusting to her new life. Things are no longer easy for her, and she no longer lives a privileged life. When she and her mother emigrate to the United States from Mexico, they find life difficult living in their tent town community. However, Esperanza and her mother start to make a life for themselves, and the result is uplifting. Depressing at first, it's a story loved by fifth and sixth grade girls, and it leads to some great discussions about the "haves" and the "havenots" throughout American History.

  • Quick read

Quick read-interesting riches to rags journey . I liked that the story was based on some of the authors grandmas experiences.
