Naomi Campbell reveals George Michael pitched his Freedom! music video to her first as she was the 'leader' of the supermodel gang

Naomi Campbell has revealed George Michael approached her first to pitch his iconic Freedom! music video as he recognised her level of influence.  

Speaking in the upcoming George Michael Freedom Uncut documentary, the 52-year-old model joined a host of other celebrities as they discussed the pop culture impact of the 1990 video. 

The video, directed by Academy Award nominee David Fincher, saw supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Tatjana Patitz team up, while George himself did not appear.

Naomi said of her involvement: 'George pitched it to me in L.A. and his exact words were "You’re the leader of the gang and unless you say yes, the rest of the girls won’t."'  

Meanwhile Cindy, 56, recalled being told: 'He wants you five, and it has to be all of you five.' 

Elton John added: 'It changed the whole face of how videos were done. The video said everything. It was genius and it was a revolutionary thing.'

The documentary features a slew of famous faces, contributors include George Michael, Stevie Wonder, Sir Elton John, Ricky Gervais, Nile Rogers, Mark Ronson, Tracey Emin, Liam Gallagher, Mary J. Blige, Jean Paul Gaultier and James Corden.

George was heavily involved in the project before his death and provided the narration for the film, which hits cinemas on June 22.

The documentary, released by Sony Music Entertainment and Trafalgar Releasing, will give fans the 'complete story' of the pop icon and gives an in depth behind-the-scenes look at George's tumultuous personal life away from the stage.

George Michael: Freedom Uncut, which is described as his 'final work', will explore an array of exclusive personal archival footage and chart the musician's life following the release of his 1987 solo album Faith up to the making of and release of his 1990 follow-up album Listen Without Prejudice: Vol 1.

Naomi said of her involvement: 'George pitched it to me in L.A. and his exact words were "You’re the leader of the gang and unless you say yes, the rest of the girls won’t."'

It will also take a look at the heartache suffered by the star over the loss of his first love Anselmo Feleppa - who died aged 36 from an AIDS-related illness - and the death of his beloved mother.

In addition, the posthumous release, directed by George and close friend David Austin, while also serve as a reminder of George's incredible career, from his days in Wham! through to his solo career.

The official synopsis for the feature reads: 'George offers up an open and honest look at the two sides of life; his very public journey in his music career and also his personal life, a side the cameras never truly saw.

'The film is interspersed with timeless duets with George’s favourite artists, and explores how he influenced the cultural landscape of his generation as one of the world’s best-selling music artists of all time.'

While David shared: 'The film is George's final work. Narrated by George himself, it is the complete story.

The Amazing songster is set to show his appreciation for superfan Adele, as well as discussing his own death in haunting scenes.

The Hello hitmaker, who openly shared her adoration for the pop icon, is set to feature in the documentary film, as George shares his 'love' for her music.

In an interview with The Sun, David Austin - George's close pal and the director of new film Freedom Uncut turns out - spoke on how George was a huge fan of Adele's.

When asked who his mate would have loved to perform with, David said: 'I think probably Adele. He loved Adele, actually. He would sing along with Adele.'

The documentary features Adele, who dressed up as George for a fancy dress bash in 2018 and can be heard singing George's 1990 track Fastlove.

David discovered the home footage used in the feature-length documentary when he was going through an old cupboard.

He said: 'I was a bit apprehensive to start with. 'I was going through a cupboard one day and I found this little drinks bag — this Harrods cooler bag.

David admitted he used to record everything, but fans will also see video that George shot himself: 'I opened it up and it had all of his home footage he'd lost, that he shot himself.'
